When I read this story in my local paper this morning about a three-month old lab pup getting fatally shot, I couldn't help but be reminded of this post and the comments that had been made. So, so heartbreaking.

You are absolutely correct. They need to expell energy just like children. If you want your house intact you MUST train and exercise your lab. They will cuddle when they are good and ready to settle for the night (at least mine does)

Thank you for posting this! Diesel is now 7 months old and people keep asking "why is he like THAT?" "what's wrong with your dog?" "I've seen labs and none of them act like yours". I keep telling them that he is only 7 months old and a bundle of energy. They cannot see that he listens wonderfully well, knows all sorts of tricks and loves with a heart that knows no end. All they see is the running, the mouthing, the constant trying to play. I love him more than I ever thought possible, and I am was/ am prepared to do what it takes to help him become one of "those labs" that people think are just born that way. People need to do their research before they buy a puppy. If you want a dog that will just flop down on your feet and lay there while you pet them, either don't get a lab - or be prepared to exercise them silly until they get to the point of being so tired they are ready to flop down (for an hour until they regain their energy!)

Yeah, my heart really starts breaking this time of year thinking of all the cute little Lab pups going to new homes as Christmas presents, knowing that a large percentage of them are not going to be loved and appreciated in the way they deserve.
