Long Drool of the Midwest

by Shannon Steffen on December 17, 2008

People who visit our home continue to ask why we cover our beautiful wood floors with big black indoor-outdoor mats. Instead of answering, I figure a video is worth a thousand words. *laugh*

No, she doesn’t have a glandular problem – she’s a Labrador Retriever. Watch this chocolate Lab beauty (our own Dakota) drool 70% of her body weight while waiting to eat her cookie.

My husband and I are happily owned by a beautiful drooling choc lab, but really didn’t like the sloppy drinking water situation. A solution that is working for us is to use and eleveated and deep drinking bowl, only filled a few inches with water. This makes the dog reach for the water and less mess splashes outside. You’ll have to refill the water more often, but if kept in a convenient place, it’s not a bad trade off at all. Our hardwood floors are a lot happier now.

Our lab drools and has the Niagara Falls drinking water problem. However, we’ve noticed “Niagara” is reduced greatly if you use an elevated dish that is really deep, with only a few inches of water (NOT full). This keeps the head down in the bowl a bit more and there is less sloppiness all aroud it. You’ll have to re-fill the water bowl a bit more often, but if kept in a convenient place, that’s not a bad trade off.

That is nothing short of superb. I’m sure most of us can relate…

Our labs are exactly like that! Drives me nuts. They’re really bad drinking water, because they don’t lick their chops and cause massive flooding around their water dish.

That’s great! It’s nice to see what I have to look forward to as the new papa of an 11 week old choco!

i can’t believe that! i have three chocolate labs and none of them drool that much. a little here and there even when we hold out a treat like that. but all three tend to make drinking an action similar to niagara falls as well. their water-er has been relegated to the basement concrete floor with a towel as well! lol. but i wouldn’t trade my babies for anything. :)

Chester is a drooler too when he knows there is even a slim chance food will come his way. It’s like turning on a faucet!! I just replaced his “normal” water bowl in the living room with an 8 qt. horse bucket. I would have to fill the old one 2-3 times every evening. The first night he tried to drink the bucket dry too but after a 10 minute pee I think he has accepted the fact that some water should stay in the bucket! Ah, to know a lab is to love a lab!!

That’s a great idea! I have to get video of Dakota drinking water – it is like Niagara Falls! LOL

that’s great. I have to keep a towel under Po Campo’s water bowl because after he finishes drinking he leaves a small river behind.
