Dogs need to have their ears cleaned just like humans do and Labrador Retrievers are especially prone to ear infections if not done correctly, but certain preventative measures need to be taken so that no infections result. If you would like to begin cleaning your own dog’s ears, like we do with the Lab Brats, instead of taking it to a groomer or veterinarian, please read on for some easy to understand directions and tips. (Sorry, there are no tips for dragging you dog out of the corner once it knows what you are up to.)
You will need:
- Cotton balls or tissues/soft paper towels
- Cotton swabs
- Dog ear-cleaning solution
- Use a canine ear wash formulated for dog and cat ear cleaning. It’s important to use a product that deodorizes and gently cleans, dries and acidifies the ear canal. Products that contain Aloe Vera are even better.
- Apply liberally into the ear canal while holding the flap of the ear up. This allows the wash to get deep into the ear canal.
- Massage the base of the ear lightly for 20 seconds.
- Place the cotton ball of tissue in your dog’s ear and gently rub up and down. If the ear is very dirty, use a tissue to help clean deeper in the ear canal.
- Allow your pet to shake its head when you are done to remove excess solution. This is important to prevent ear infections.
- Soak the tip of a cotton swab in the ear wash and run it along the nooks and crannies of your dog’s outer ears.
- Give loads of praise and treats to your pooch for a job well done!
Please note: Avoid putting the swab down your dog’s ear canal; leave this type of cleaning to the veterinary medical staff. If your dog has chronic ear infections, consult a veterinarian. Chronic ear infections could be a sign of allergies or other problems. If the ear canal looks abnormal, clean only the outside and consult a vet.
In excessively dirty dog ears: Apply 2-3 times daily over several days.
For maintenance: Use 1-2 times weekly or as often as recommended by your veterinarian. Always dry ears after swimming.
