SNIF Brings Social Networking to the Dogs

SNIFTag Mascot

Want to monitor your dog’s activities while you’re away from home? SNIF let’s Fido keep in touch with both human and canine friends alike.

The SNIFTM website states:

“Share helpful information and pet tips online. And get connected to your community. It’s hi-tech, it’s hi-style, easy to use, and completely customizable. The SNIFTM Tag is way more than a digital dog tag. It’s a window into your dog’s world. You can see what he’s up to right now, what he’s been up to all day, week, or month, and how he stacks up to other dogs. Share helpful information and pet tips online to your dog’s friends and yours. It’s fun, sure. But it’s also good for your dog’s health, and your peace of mind.”

I just don’t know how I feel about this. I mean, it is one thing to want to know how your dog is feeling or what they are thinking but to put a chip around your canine companion’s neck to monitor it’s life-cycle on your computer reminds me of the Sims game. Now, the SNIFTag will not allow you to control your dog as you move it around your house or in the virtual world but it will tell you things such as real-time tracking of what your dog is doing every minute of every day (sleeping, trotting, walking), keep track of your dog’s canine friends (if they have a SNIFTag as well), keep a history of everything your dog does, comparing your dog to other registered users/friends and also attend organized SNIFTM functions.

Call me old-fashioned but I like to meet with other dog owners and talk about our dogs. In a way, the human being acts as their dog’s administrative assistant, health coach and representative. A dog community leads to talking (as well as sniffing) which builds relationship. Take the human factor and replace it with a computer chip with more hours on the computer and less time playing with my Labrador Retrievers? I think I will pass. For me, no microchip in a dog’s collar can replace real social networking that happens in a dog park or even in one’s home. There is no substitute for the real thing.

And, if I was really wanting to know what my dog does while I am away all day, I will just set up a web cam like every other infatuated (borderline obsessive) dog owner and watch my pups drool in their sleep in real-time.
