Every large breed dog owner knows how their dogs don’t know their own weight or strength. No matter what they are doing, dogs run around without a care in the world and some even use human beings as comfy cozy seat cushions or leaning polls. However, there is one danger that all large breed dog owners forget until the playing gets wild and someone gets hurt – the human.
Now I am not talking about getting plowed over as though you are a paper in the wind – like my husband when he went stomach first on a patch of ice as Cheyenne was running from her big sister (all I heard was the thump and saw my husband sprawled out on his face). What I am talking about are those delicate things attached to your legs – your feet people!
It seems my own Lab Brats know exactly when mommy’s feet are bare and not properly tucked under her own body or the chair. No matter if it is 70lbs or 84lbs (with the largest paws I have ever seen on a Labrador Retriever), it still hurts and the pain is even worse when you are left hobbling from one foot to the other because one of the dogs were genius enough to get both of your feet while throwing you aside to grab the Frisbee from their canine sibling. Yes people, my Dakota must be a genius because, although I have two feet, she stepped on my feet 3 times in one single run past me!! I had no choice but to double over onto the dining room table while my husband’s almost wet his pants. (No, he is not very helpful during such situations.)
So I beg you – please protect those tootsies and put some shoes on or tuck them under you before you start to play with your dog – you only have two of them and I doubt most large breed dogs can even feel them under the giant hooves! Heck, we are only here to pet, feed, and throw the ball for our beloved dogs – what do we need feet for anyway!

This is the worst! I think labs step on our feet on purpose! lol Our yellow lab even likes sitting on my feet.
Yeah, humans can only blame their dogs for so much but when they instigate then they have no one to blame but themselves. Happens all the time in my house.
My Mama always complains about how many bruises she has on her arms and legs and scratches on her hands.
But, really, SHE is the one who makes prey noises and runs to the bedroom and jumps on the bed and expects me to jump up and play. I can’t help it if I get some speed in the run up and, instead of landing on the bed, I land on Mommy.
I am not a very big boy. Only 65 pounds of furry chocolate lovin’!
But you are SO RIGHT about feet. Mama wore these fluffy socks once and they drove me CRAZY!
Lots of licks and woofs,
Puppy Dog
We aren’t labs but Jan has the same complaint. We’ve been known to take her right out of her shoes, step on her bare toes, and — well, Sam has no sense of his own size and power. He’s kind of a danger to everything and everyone. But fortunately, we’re still loved.
I totally agree! Dogs do not know howmuch is too much for their owners. My brown lab lays in the middle of the floor in the kitchen at night and when I go through I am not able to see her and trip all over the kitchen.
