Every spring most dog breeds will blow their coats. So, why is it now the end of summer and my house is overrun with butt fur!?
Yes, the Lab Brats are shedding like wild beasts and the routine of vacuuming every three days has now turned into an every day even in order to keep up with the furry tumbleweeds all over the house. I kid you not!
We brush the dogs every week with a shedding blade and alternate with the Furminator. This work beautifully as the backyard becomes a chocolate fluffy haven of tumbleweeds rolling up and the wind will usually carry it up and over the fence (to our neighbors yard on accident `laugh`). However, no matter how much we brush or vacuum, the little buggers show up like a long lost family member looking for money.
Every night our Labrador Retrievers go to sleep in their crates and we wake in the morning to find clumps of butt fur right in front of our bedroom door. It is like Hansel and Gretel were visiting and ran out of breadcrumbs.
How do we know it is fur from their butts? We can see it coming out in clumps right at their tails where they have huge tufts of fur. Every day we pull the lose clumps by hand and throw them in the garbage.
Do the dogs have allergies or some sort of weird disease? No way! They are “English” Show Labrador Retrievers and with their beautiful build and blockheads come very dense coats… I just wish they would leave their leftover furry belongings somewhere else!

What is it with Choc labs in the summer my Choc is now going Blonde. a Bit of Tony and Guy going on !! XX
I have a golden retriever and he is losing clumps of fur as well. This is the first year that this has happened and he is 9 years old. Is it from the heat?
It is definitely an abnormal summer for all retrievers (and maybe all dogs). We originally thought it was just out Labs shedding so much and then asked around and it was everyone. It seems to be a weather thing this year so I wouldn’t worry unless your pup showed signs of allergies.
What a coincidence to read about the fur. I have a yellow lab, Chris Anderson bred. Our Cody is shedding like crazy. When he shakes himself you can see tons of it falling off. I just brush him, thinking it will slow down a bit and no, the fur is just falling this summer. Chris mentioned it also, it’s a bad year.
Hi! I just came across your blog and I love it. I have a 7 month old chocolate lab and he’s the love of our life! I’ll be checking back often.
