I read your wonderful article on toxic food for dogs, thank you. You mentioned raw salmon but how about canned salmon used in baked pet treats? I also fed my basset hound salmon and sweet potato dog food because he had allergies. Is canned salmon safe to use in baking treats? Thanks so much.

Dog food made with salmon is perfectly fine for dogs as it is processed correctly to remove any impurities that may cause the dogs to get sick. Our own Lab Brats are on the Eagle Pack Holistic Anchovy, Sardine & Salmon Meal formula dry dog food and do quite well on it. The Omega-3 fatty acids help with the oily skin of the Labrador Retriever and give them a nice shiny coat. However, raw salmon can prove deadly:
Salmon Poisoning Disease is a potentially fatal condition seen in dogs that eat certain types of raw fish. Salmon (salmonid fish) and other anadromous fish (fish that swim upstream to breed) can be infected with a parasite called Nanophyetus salmincola. Overall, the parasite is relatively harmless. The danger occurs when the parasite itself is infected with a rickettsial organism called Neorickettsia helminthoeca. It’s this microorganism that causes salmon poisoning.
Is the canned salmon made for dogs or for human consumption? If it is processed, it is usually fine as the organisms are usually killed off during processing but I would stay away from raw salmon, especially if self-caught during a fishing trip, as there could be serious side effects.
Remember that any treat should be given in moderation. This will not only help protect your dog from serious health problems but also keep him lean and trim.
