Good Dog Bowl with Puppy

Choosing the best dog food for your pup is one of the most important decisions you will make as a responsible dog owner. With so many dog foods to choose from and ingredient lists that make your head spin, which dog food not only the best for your beloved canine companion but also will health it live a long and healthy life as part of your family? One dog lover asks the question: what dog food brands are bad and which are good?

Question:
This article [Dog Food: A Toxic Waste Dump] is horrifying and the worst part of it is that people are so afraid of litigation; you can’t or won’t tell the public which manufacturers are guilty of these practices. I want to know which brands of dog food to not feed our dog that is a beloved member of the family whose well being is most important. In your response to Kelly you write “Dog owners really need to be aware of what they are feeding their beloved pups.” but I didn’t get that from the article at all as no names are mentioned.

Answer:
Each dog reacts differently to dog foods depending on the quality of the food, your dog’s breed (large, small, puppy) and specific dietary needs of the animal. It is easier to point out which types of dog foods to feed as opposed to pointing out the hundreds of dog food brands that are horrible for your canine companion.

When choosing a high quality dog food, pay attention to any changes in health or behavior to see if your dog may have some sensitivity to the new dog food. However, you will find that many of the holistic dog food brands don’t contain those ingredients that cause dog food allergies such as chicken by-products and gluten.

With that said, here is a list of the most highly recommended dry dog foods:

  • Eagle Pack Holistic Select Dry Dog Food – Family-founded Eagle Pack Pet Foods began in the 1980′s as one of the first holistic-natural pet diets available. Both Eagle Pack Holistic Select® and Eagle Pack Super Premium brands consist of all-natural, human grade ingredients including holistic and custom supplements.
  • Castor & Pollux Natural and Organic Pet Works – Named for Castor the Dog and Pollux the Cat, Castor & Pollux Pet Works is a company comprised of animal lovers dedicated to providing high-quality organic and natural products for pets.
  • Canidae All Natural Pet Foods – Canidae pledges to use only the finest quality, all-natural, human grade ingredients. Their products do not contain corn, wheat, soy, grain fractions, fillers or by products. All products are made in USDA and FDA approved facilities in the United States.
  • Blue Buffalo Natural Dog Food – The Blue Buffalo Company was created out of a love for pets and dedication to high quality nutrition. The company was named for the founders’ dog Blue, who has suffered from cancer. BLUE set out to create a diet that could help protect pets from cancer using natural, wholesome ingredients.

The Lab Brats have been on a rotation (between different varieties of this food) of Eagle Pack Holistic for years now and everyone comments how healthy and beautiful their coats and eyes. We were even more secure in our decision on this food as it was one of the few that were not recalled during the huge dog food recall some time ago. Sure, it costs a little extra money but our dogs are not only healthier and happier but we don’t worry about what’s in our food such as the article “Dog Food: A Toxic Waste Dump” pointed out.
