Labrador Retriever Not Eating

Sad Chocolate Labrador Retriever

Question:
My 3 month old lab woke up this morning not doing good. There was vomit in her area and stool with blood. Took her to the vet the gave her two shots and gave her some antibiotics to start on tonight and vomit pills if it continues. Been back home for about 3 hours now and she is not eating and still not playful. I’m very concerned any advise.

Answer:
I would definitely not feed her anything for the 24 hours after she last vomited but make sure to have plenty of fresh water available to her.

Between the shots and being sick, she is most likely going to need some time to get better. Tomorrow morning you can give her a little boiled ground beef mixed with rice. Boil ground beef until it is all cooked, drain and mix with cooked rice – it should be more rice than beef.

This will give her a good bland meal to start with. Just feed her a little at a time and give her about 1-hour after each feeding to see if she is able to keep it down. After a couple of days on this bland diet, you can start slowly mixing in some of her food to see how she does.

By doing this, you are giving her time to heal and rest up. However, if she still refuses to eat or you notice that she isn’t drinking any water, seek your vet’s advice as she could easily become dehydrated.

Our lab Daisy just got over a spell like that. She is just over a year old, started with vomiting progressed to bloody stools. Took her to the vet they kept her over night for iv fluids, antibiotics. We brought her home the next day but it was about 4 days before she had any apetite. I cooked her boiled turkey and rice which she ate very small amounts of, and she LOVES to eat. After about 4 days though she finally came around and now I’m pretty sure she is making up for lost time. The vet told us she probably drank some stagnent water so we have been really watching what she sticks her tongue in! Good luck with yours!
